Solar Powered Water Purification for the Children of Diani
5 Comments »Posted in About Diani, Charities
One of the Millennium Development Goals was safe drinking water for all but we know that it is far from reality. Getting safe water usually requires expensive water plants to be constructed and staffed by specialist staff who ensure that all the machines are running and the chemicals put into the water in right ratios.
This expensive process is the reason why clean drinking water is a challenge in most poor countries. However, Trunz Water Systems has developed water purification units that use readily available power from the sun and wind. These compact, mobile water treatment and desalination systems are powered using revewable sources and have no limits as you don’t need to be near power lines to use the plant.
One of the Trunz solar powered water treatment unit, the TWU 002 comes complete and ready to deploy. It provides approx. 900 litres of clean drinking water per hour from any non saline water source with a max. turbidity of 1 NTU. Thats 10800 litres of water for 12 hours. Powered by solar energy it can run without ongoing fuel and fuel transportation costs. The system is complete with feed pump, automatic back flushing filtration, batteries, solar panels and controls. An Ultra-filtration membrane removes all virus and bacteria without requiring toxic chemical treatment. This process retains the natural minerals in the source water.
The Trunz solar powered water treatment unit is ideal for decentralised water purification in remote communities, clinics, resort application etc. The system is very compact, easy to install and to maintain.
Whats more, the system can be put up on a truck and run from anywhere-no matter how remote as long as the sun is shining and the wind is blowing.
As you read this, such a unit is being used at the Diani Childrens home and it is so efficient that even members of the community around the home have access to the water as well. This independent and innovative solution is based on the latest developments in photovoltaic technology that have resulted in reduction of the equipments costs.
The unit is sustainable, environmentally friendly and independent solution, high-efficient, high quality and long-life componentsall components specially designed for 24 VDC and working under harsh conditions system is field proofed and working well in several countries such as Afghanistan, Mauritania and Venezuela. To achieve the clean and safe drinking water, the system is equiped with two different two different filtration technologies.
Ultrafiltration
For river, lake or rwell water. The ultrafiltration membrane removes organic contaminants, viruses, bacteria, cysts, etc. down to a size of 0.04 micron without requiring toxic chemical treatment. Ultrafiltration works through a mechanical procedure. Raw water is filtered under pressure through a high-technology hollow fibre membrane. This process remains the natural minerals in the water.
Reverse Osmosis
For sea, salted, well, brackish water. In addition to removing salt the Reverse Osmosis technology removes all contaminants, viruses, bacteria, cysts etc. down to a size of 0.01 micron withouth requiring toxic chemical treatment. The reverse osmosis filtration technology is based on a multi-layer membrane which filters the water under high water pressure.
The two filtration system result in clean drinking water that is safe for consumption. The children at Diani Childrens Home and the community around can attest to this. In addition, the unit is commercially viable as it provides 800 litres of water at the cost of $1.
The Trunz water treatment units are being provided by a Kenyan Company Tomash International limited. This company is based Diani Beach, south coast of Mombasa. From 2010 Tomash International became official dealer of Trunz Water Systems for Kenya – solar and wind powered drinking water treatment units.
