Mombasa is a town that blends old with new in a harmonious mix of colour, architecture and culture. Kenya’s second biggest city and East Africa’s busiest port, Mombasa still bears a strong touch of european, oriental, arabic and african influences that ornate its colourful past.The natives of the town- the swahili are the descendants of African and Arab intermarriages and the Swahili language is a sweet blend of arabic and coastal bantu dialect that is also spoken in Diani Beach. Mombasa is a vibrant mix of antiquity and modernism you will not find anywhere else on the East African coast.
Take a guided tour with us from Diani Beach and discover the old Mombasa town, filled with mystique and splendour. The narrow alleys will twist you round old fashioned houses with over-hanging balconies and magnificent carved wooden doors. All this as the children play on the verandahs and old men sip strong masala coffee outside. Walking through the old town takes you back to a different time in history and strongly feels like another continent due to the emphatic arabic/oriental architecture.Our guide will take you to different areas of the old towns from bustling markets, bazaars to antique shops filled with exotic spices, fruits, antiquties and colourful fabrics. Thereafter, take a tour of the 600 year old fort jesus and the dhow harbour.A visit to the Akamba wood carvers will have emptying your wallet on the fascinating wood carvings on offer. The expert carvers offer excellent sculptures of african people and wildlife. Mementos are available here and prices are negotiable.Thereafter, plentiful photo opportunities await you at the Ngomongo Cultural Center. A miniature village that recreates african tribal life as it was in the early centuries. This village has homesteads depicting different Kenyan tribes and provides an excellent cultural tour. You will enjoy traditional african foods (and brews), songs and dances and folklore.
The next stop is the world famous Haller Park, also known as Bamburi Nature trail. This spectacular park was created from an old limestone quarry. Currently, Bamburi Nature trail is lush and teaming with animals such as Hippo, Waterbuck, Giraffe and Elands. You will also get to see Oryx , Serval cat and Ostrich and over 22 bird species including the rare Crested crane at the at disused quarry.In the afternoon, Mamba Village awaits. It is Africa’s largest Crocodile Farm and you will be able to see crocodiles from a much closer view that will ever in the wild. The Mamba village also has a restaurant where you can have a bite or two of crocodile based dishes. The highlight of this visit will be at 5:00 pm where you can watch the crocodiles in a one of a kind feeding frenzy.
